Select a suitable shoot, in this case, Garnet. Diameter at the base should ideally be between a little under one eighth and three sixteenths of an inch (2 to 4mm) to allow some flexibility when using understock that's not perfectly straight. Shoots can be used from early July to mid August depending on the growing season in your area.
